April is National Foot Health Awareness Month
In order to raise awareness for foot health, we put together a list of foot health care tips for our patients and their friends and family. Please share these tips them!
Tips for Daily Hygiene
Wash your feet each day with warm water and soap to prevent infections. Then dry your feet completely before putting on socks or slippers.
If you have dry feet, use moisturizer and let it absorb completely before putting socks on. This will prevent cracked skin, where viruses, fungi, and bacteria can get into your feet.
Check your feet after washing. Treat injuries with first aid and make sure there aren’t any skin changes, discolorations, or new bumps.
To kill off bacteria or fungi living in your shoes, rotate the shoes that you wear so that they have time to fully dry out after each wear. You can also use shoe spray.
General Foot Care Tips
Do you stand or walk a lot during the day? Give them some love by stretching your feet and giving them a quick massage to relax and relieve tension.
Shoes should fit well. Get sized each time you purchase shoes and choose shoes that have good support in the arches and heel cups. They should have good cushioning and a snug fit.
Toenails should be trimmed straight across and not too short to prevent ingrown toenails. If you get pedicures, try to take the first appointment of the day to get sterilized tools. However, take breaks in between wears to prevent brittle, discolored toenails.
Wear flip-flops in communal shower and pool areas to prevent fungal and viral infections.
Apply sunblock when your feet are exposed to the sun.
Eat healthy and exercise. If you have diabetes or other conditions with nerve pain or poor circulation, stay on top of your health care needs so that your feet are not further affected.
